Best Food for Boerboel Puppies and Adults
Nutrition has an outsized effect on a giant breed's joints, weight, and longevity. Here's what to look for.
Large-breed puppy formula
- Feed a large-breed puppy formula with controlled calcium and balanced calcium-to-phosphorus, which supports slow, steady growth and protects joints.
- Avoid overfeeding — rapid growth increases the risk of orthopedic problems.
Adult feeding
- Choose a quality adult formula appropriate for large breeds.
- Keep your Boerboel lean. You should be able to feel ribs without pressing. Excess weight stresses joints and shortens lifespan.
Meal structure and bloat
- Feed two or more smaller meals rather than one large meal.
- Use a slow-feeder bowl, and avoid heavy exercise right before and after eating to reduce bloat risk. See our common health issues guide for bloat warning signs.
Supplements
Joint supplements (glucosamine, chondroitin, omega-3) can support a large breed; ask your vet. For overall care, start with the Boerboel breed guide.
