Best Food for Boerboel Puppies and Adults

Nutrition has an outsized effect on a giant breed's joints, weight, and longevity. Here's what to look for.

Large-breed puppy formula

• Feed a large-breed puppy formula with controlled calcium and balanced calcium-to-phosphorus, which supports slow, steady growth and protects joints.

• Avoid overfeeding — rapid growth increases the risk of orthopedic problems.

Adult feeding

• Choose a quality adult formula appropriate for large breeds.

• Keep your Boerboel lean. You should be able to feel ribs without pressing. Excess weight stresses joints and shortens lifespan.

Meal structure and bloat
